Comparaison des performances d'élevage de moules en 4 sites mytilicoles de la baie de Vilaine, de février 2000 à février 2001 ArchiMer
Mazurie, Joseph; Bouget, Jean-francois; Claude, Serge; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Langlade, Aime.
Mussel samples have been placed in plastic-mesh bags hung on wood poles (« bouchots »), at 4 locations of a mussel culture area in the bay of Vilaine (South Brittany, France). They have been monitored for one year, from February 2000 to February 2001. The recorded growth have been rather fast (plus 1.2 g per month between April and September), and mortalities moderate (between 15% to 25%), with better results in southern stations, further from the estuary. Among the physico-chemical parameters recorded, the most striking were very low salinities (below 10 g/l) recorded for days, after heavy rains. They provoqued a valve closure of mussels (recorded by a « valvometer »). Some physiological indicators being tested (muscle force and hermeticity) seemed to...

Decreased muscle strength is associated with proinflammatory cytokines but not testosterone levels in men with diabetes BJMBR
Ferreira,J.P.; Leal,A.M.O.; Vasilceac,F.A.; Sartor,C.D.; Sacco,I.C.N.; Soares,A.S.; Salvini,T.F..
The aim of this study was to compare muscle strength in male subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) with and without low plasma testosterone levels and assess the relationship between muscle strength, testosterone levels, and proinflammatory cytokines. Males (75) aged between 18 and 65 years were divided into 3 groups: control group that did not have diabetes and had a normal testosterone plasma level (>250 ng/dL), DnormalTT group that had DM2 with normal testosterone levels, and the DlowTT group that had DM2 and low plasma testosterone levels (<250 ng/dL). The age (means±SD) of the groups was 48.4±10, 52.6±7, and 54.6±7 years, respectively. Isokinetic concentric and isometric torque of knee flexors and extensors were analyzed by an isokinetic...

Effect of L-carnitine on exercise performance in patients with mitochondrial myopathy BJMBR
Gimenes,A.C.; Bravo,D.M.; Nápolis,L.M.; Mello,M.T.; Oliveira,A.S.B.; Neder,J.A.; Nery,L.E..
Exercise intolerance due to impaired oxidative metabolism is a prominent symptom in patients with mitochondrial myopathy (MM), but it is still uncertain whether L-carnitine supplementation is beneficial for patients with MM. The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of L-carnitine on exercise performance in MM. Twelve MM subjects (mean age±SD=35.4±10.8 years) with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO) were first compared to 10 healthy controls (mean age±SD=29±7.8 years) before they were randomly assigned to receive L-carnitine supplementation (3 g/daily) or placebo in a double-blind crossover design. Clinical status, body composition, respiratory function tests, peripheral muscle strength (isokinetic and isometric torque) and...

Identification of sarcopenic obesity in postmenopausal women: a cutoff proposal BJMBR
Oliveira,R.J.; Bottaro,M.; Júnior,J.T.; Farinatti,P.T.V.; Bezerra,L.A.; Lima,R.M..
Sarcopenic obesity is the combination of reduced fat-free mass (FFM) and increased fat mass (FM) with advancing age but there is lack of clear criteria for its identification. The purposes of the present investigation were: 1) to determine the prevalence of postmenopausal women with reduced FFM relative to their FM and height, and 2) to examine whether there are associations between the proposed classification and health-related variables. A total of 607 women were included in this cross-sectional study and were separated into two subsets: 258 older women with a mean age of 66.8 ± 5.6 years and 349 young women aged 18-40 years (mean age, 29.0 ± 7.5 years). All volunteers underwent body composition assessment by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The FFM...

Muscle strength but not functional capacity is associated with plasma interleukin-6 levels of community-dwelling elderly women BJMBR
Oliveira,D.M.G.; Narciso,F.M.S.; Santos,M.L.A.S.; Pereira,D.S.; Coelho,F.M.; Dias,J.M.D.; Pereira,L.S.M..
The association of plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels, muscle strength and functional capacity was investigated in a cross-sectional study of community-dwelling elderly women from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Elderly people who present controlled chronic diseases with no negative impact on physical, psychosocial and mental functionality are considered to be community-dwelling. Psychological and social stress due to unsuccessfully aging can represent a risk for immune system disfunctions. IL-6 levels, isokinetic muscle strength of knee flexion/extension, and functional tests to determine time required to rise from a chair and gait velocity were measured in 57 participants (71.21 ± 7.38 years). Serum levels of IL-6 were measured in duplicate and were performed...

Pros and cons of insulin administration on liver glucose metabolism in strength-trained healthy mice BJMBR
Pereira,V.A.R.; Vedovelli,K.S.; Muller,G.Y.; Depieri,Y.F.; Avelar,D.H.C.G.; de Amo,A.H.E.; Jimenes,D.R.; Martins,J.N.L.; Silvério,A.C.; Gomes,C.R.G.; Godoi,V.A.F.; Pedrosa,M.M.D..
Non-diabetic individuals use hormones like insulin to improve muscle strength and performance. However, as insulin also leads the liver and the adipose tissue to an anabolic state, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of insulin on liver metabolism in trained non-diabetic Swiss mice. The mice were divided into four groups: sedentary treated with saline (SS) or insulin (SI) and trained treated with saline (TS) or insulin (TI). Training was made in a vertical stair, at 90% of the maximum load, three times per week. Insulin (0.3 U/kg body weight) or saline were given intraperitoneally five times per week. After eight weeks, tissue and blood were collected and in situ liver perfusion with glycerol+lactate or alanine+glutamine (4 mM each)...

Relationship between aerobic capacity and pelvic floor muscles function: a cross-sectional study BJMBR
Jürgensen,S.P.; Borghi-Silva,A.; Bastos,A.M.F.G.; Correia,G.N.; Pereira-Baldon,V.S.; Cabiddu,R.; Catai,A.M.; Driusso,P..
The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between aerobic capacity and pelvic floor muscles (PFM) function in adult women. Women aged 18 or over and without urinary dysfunction or other chronic diseases were eligible to participate. They completed the habitual physical activity (HPA) questionnaire, underwent a PFM functional evaluation by palpation and perineometry, and performed a submaximal (between 75 and 85% of maximum heart rate) cardiopulmonary exercise (CPX) test to determine the ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VAT). Forty-one women were included (35±16 years, 75% physically active, 17% very active, and 8% sedentary and 17% presented grade 1 PFM contraction, 31.8% grade 2, 26.8% grade 3, and 24.4% grade 4, according to the...

The effects of stretching on the flexibility, muscle performance and functionality of institutionalized older women BJMBR
Gallon,D.; Rodacki,A.L.F.; Hernandez,S.G.; Drabovski,B.; Outi,T.; Bittencourt,L.R.; Gomes,A.R.S..
Stretching has been widely used to increase the range of motion. We assessed the effects of a stretching program on muscle-tendon length, flexibility, torque, and activities of daily living of institutionalized older women. Inclusion/exclusion criteria were according to Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) (>13), Barthel Index (>13) and Lysholm Scoring Scale (>84). Seventeen 67 ± 9 year-old elderly women from a nursing home were divided into 2 groups at random: the control group (CG, N = 9) participated in enjoyable cultural activities; the stretching group (SG, N = 8) performed active stretching of hamstrings, 4 bouts of 1 min each. Both groups were supervised three times per week over a period of 8 weeks. Peak torque was assessed by an...
